Pillager Outposts are hostile constructions found in the Overworld biome that were introduced in the 2019 Village Pillage update.
These outposts are made up of a watchtower, tent, training area and other buildings, and they can spawn in a variety of biomes, including plains, desert, snowy taiga and sunflower plains.
Players approaching the outpost will be attacked by pillagers, and valuable items such as crossbows, flags, and emeralds can be obtained by raiding the outpost.
Spawning and structure of the outpost varies between Java and Bedrock editions, and this article will discuss the approach and attack, loot and location, and spawning and structure of Pillager Outposts in Minecraft.
Approach and Attack
When approaching a Pillager Outpost, players will be subject to attack from the hostile mob, Pillagers.
As the outpost is a large, fortified structure in the Overworld biome, it is home to the Pillagers, a new kind of mob added in the 2019 Village Pillage update.
Players will have to be cautious when entering the perimeter of the outpost as the Pillagers will attack on sight.
It is possible to fight back and defend oneself, but doing so will mean risking the valuable loot that can be obtained within the outpost.
The loot includes items such as crossbows, flags, and emeralds, all of which can be found within the outpost’s watchtower, tent, training area, and other buildings.
Loot and Location
Valuable items such as crossbows, flags, and emeralds can be acquired through raids of semi-rare constructions appearing in various biomes. Pillager outposts are found every few hundred to a few thousand blocks apart, and can generate in biomes where villages do not spawn. These include plains, desert, snowy taiga, sunflower plains, meadow, grove, snowy slopes, jagged peaks, frozen peaks, stony peaks, and cherry groves. Outposts generated differently in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, with differences in the foundation and appearance.

are available to be looted from the outpost. Iron golems and allays can only spawn inside cages during the construction of a pillager outpost. Pillagers spawn in specific areas around the watchtower in Java Edition, and at or below a particular location within the outpost in Bedrock Edition. Pillager outposts are dangerous locations in Minecraft and are more rare than villages but less rare than woodland mansions.
Spawning and Structure
Spawned creatures and structures surrounding a fortified structure vary between the Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. In Java Edition, Iron Golems and Allays can only spawn inside cages during the construction of a Pillager Outpost. Pillagers spawn in specific areas around the watchtower. For Bedrock Edition, Pillagers spawn at or below a particular location within the outpost and can spawn on any valid opaque block with a block light level of 8 or less. Additionally, for Java Edition, 15 jigsaw blocks can generate structures around the tower, with a 1 in 13 chance for each structure. Up to eight Pillagers, including the Captain, can spawn in a Pillager Outpost.
